Strengthening the Missing Middle in Agribusiness for Rapid Transformation (SMART) project in Mozambique, implemented by International Development Enterprises (iDE) and funded by Swedish International Development Cooperation Agency (SIDA), was aimed at strengthening agribusiness markets and improving the competitiveness of small commercial farmers (SCF) and smallholder farmers (SHF). The mid-term evaluation by Innovision assessed how SMART interventions supported market system development, increased agricultural productivity, and enhanced farmer income despite disruptions caused by Cyclones Idai and Kenneth and the COVID-19 pandemic.
Innovision applied a mixed research method, including a quantitative survey with 384 farmers across Manica, Sofala, and Tete provinces and qualitative interviews with Farmer Business Associations (FBA), market actors, and project stakeholders.
Innovision observed that Input Trade and Technology Fairs (ITTF) created unintended market distortions by reducing farmers’ reliance on local agro-dealers. The report therefore recommends strengthening market linkages, improving monitoring systems, and developing sustainable transition strategies to ensure long-term systemic change in Mozambique’s agricultural value chains.
