1. Industrial Design Expert – ISEC Project

This short-term consultancy offers the opportunity to directly improve productivity, safety, and sustainability in the salt sector by optimizing the design and layout of salt crushing mills. You will work with local entrepreneurs, field teams, and stakeholders under the framework of the “Improving Skills and Economic Opportunities for Women & Youth in Cox’s Bazar (ISEC)” project to deliver practical, scalable solutions that strengthen mill operations in resource-constrained settings.

Job Description

  • Position: Industrial Design Expert
  • Reports to: Team Lead, ISEC – Innovision Consulting
  • Location: Dhaka & Cox’s Bazar (with field visits)
  • Type: Short-Term Consultancy (20 working days over 1 month)

Position Summary:

The Industrial Design Expert will assess and redesign salt crushing mill layouts to enhance operational efficiency, ensure worker safety, reduce post-harvest losses, and promote energy-efficient practices. This role requires field-based diagnostics, layout redesign, toolkit development, and capacity building to support small-scale salt entrepreneurs in adopting sustainable design practices.

Key Responsibilities

Assessment & Diagnostic

  • Conduct detailed physical assessments of at least 10 salt crushing mills across various operational sizes.
  • Identify inefficiencies, hazards, and bottlenecks in layout, workflow, and equipment placement.
  • Engage millers and workers to understand on-the-ground challenges and gather qualitative insights.

Design & Optimization

  • Develop optimized, low-cost, and scalable layout templates for small, medium, and large-scale mills.
  • Integrate ergonomic principles, safety standards, and energy-saving measures into layout plans.
  • Provide solutions that are feasible for coastal and resource-limited environments.

Toolkit Development

  • Design a self-assessment toolkit for salt millers to independently evaluate their mills.
  • Ensure the toolkit is user-friendly, pictorial, checklist-based, and available in both English and Bangla.
  • Focus on monitoring areas such as production flow, safety, utility usage, and waste management.

Capacity Building

  • Conduct a one-day training workshop for millers and local project field officers.
  • Develop training materials, handouts, and visual guides.

Documentation & Reporting

  • Prepare and submit all technical deliverables, including reports, toolkits, and layout templates.

Qualifications

  • Master’s degree in Industrial Design, Mechanical Engineering, Production Engineering, or a related discipline.
  • Minimum of 10 years of experience in industrial layout planning, factory design, lean manufacturing, or process engineering.
  • Proven experience working with MSMEs, particularly in agro-processing or informal manufacturing sectors.
  • Demonstrated ability to design simple, scalable solutions with a focus on safety and resource efficiency.
  • Strong proficiency in visualization tools (e.g., AutoCAD, SketchUp, or Visio).
  • Prior experience in capacity building, training, or development sector projects will be a strong advantage.
