Policy Brief 7: Bangladesh Miracle: 50 Years of WASH in Bangladesh

Over 50 Years, Bangladesh has achieved 98.5% access to improved water, yet safely managed drinking water coverage remains at only 42.6%. Innovisions "Bangladesh Miracle" webinar, organized with WaterAid, highlighted that while physical access is high, shortsighted implementation strategies often overlook the quality and sustainability of these essential services.

Strategic challenges remain, particularly in schools where only 23% maintain the national standard of one toilet per 50 students. Innovision notes that 95% of schools are unequipped for menstrual hygiene management, contributing to high school absenteeism among adolescent girls. Furthermore, the lack of conventional sewerage systems outside Dhaka and the prevalence of unsanitary pit latrines continue to pose significant public health risks across both rural and urban landscapes.

To ensure the next 50 years are equally transformative, Innovision recommends proactive private sector integration and the adoption of commercially viable models. By mainstreaming community-led sanitation and increasing multi-stakeholder coordination, Bangladesh can bridge the quality gap and provide equitable, safely managed WASH services for all citizens.
