Policy Brief 5: Food Security to Nutrition Security: How Should Bangladesh Embrace the Future?

Innovision identifies that achieving the Bangladesh Miracle in the health sector requires a strategic transition from basic Food Security to comprehensive Nutrition Security. While Bangladesh has made significant strides in calorie availability over the last 50 Years, micronutrient deficiencies remain a critical challenge. During our fifth "Bangladesh Miracle" webinar, experts emphasized that dietary diversification must be paired with large-scale food fortification and biofortification to effectively combat hidden hunger and systemic malnutrition.

Innovision notes that the emergence of the "new poor" during the pandemic has made efficient public food distribution more vital than ever. To ensure long-term stability, the government must adopt a life-cycle approach that prioritizes adolescent nutrition, as this group acts as a primary catalyst for intergenerational health improvements.

To strengthen national governance, Innovision advocates for the creation of a National Fortification Unit (NFU) to coordinate efforts across fragmented ministries. By empowering adolescents as change-makers and linking nutrition programs with WASH and mental health initiatives, Bangladesh can embrace a future where health security is accessible to every citizen.
