Is Bangladesh on Track to Achieving the SDG Targets for Health? A Health Systems Perspective

In an exclusive Innovision event, Professor Dr. Kaosar Afsana explained whether Bangladesh is on Track for Achieving SDG Targets for health. Celebrating fifty years of progress, the discussion highlighted Bangladesh as a global exemplar in reducing fertility and under-five mortality. This "miracle" is anchored in two pillars: immunization and family planning. Coverage for the Expanded Programme on Immunization (EPI) surged from 2% in 1984 to 88% by 2019, while the total fertility rate plummeted from 6.3 to 2.3.

These successes were driven by strong political commitment, cold chain management, and partnerships with NGOs. To continue Achieving SDG Targets, there is a need to mobilize domestic resources and close the "immunization divide" in remote areas. Strengthening the science-policy interface will be vital for maintaining these gains and ensuring long-term wellness for all citizens through a sustainable health system.
