Exploring Financial Products to Reduce Modern Slavery in the Informal Apparel Sector in Bangladesh

Innovision identifies that while Bangladesh’s formal garment industry is a global leader, a vast, unregulated informal apparel sector operates in its shadow, employing thousands who are highly vulnerable to modern slavery. Workers in these informal factories face extreme exploitation, including 10–15-hour workdays, lack of formal contracts, and exposure to verbal abuse.

Our landscape study reveals that 96.8% of these workers are migrants, and nearly half of child workers involved cited systemic poverty as their primary reason for dropping out of school to enter this cycle. To break this cycle, Innovision has researched and shortlisted several targeted financial products designed to alleviate the conditions of modern slavery.

Innovision emphasizes that these solutions must be paired with consistent advocacy to address national-level challenges like school dropouts and regulatory roadblocks for small businesses. By institutionalizing financial products, we can provide a pathway for workers to accumulate wealth, improve their well-being, and ultimately pursue ambitions outside of exploitative conditions.
