Digest 5: COVID 19 Impact on Vulnerable Groups: People with Disabilities

Innovision Consulting’s Digest 5 analyses the COVID-19 impact on vulnerable groups, focusing on People with Disabilities who were engaged in economic activities before the lockdown. A survey of 100 respondents across Bangladesh shows that 29% worked in skilled labour, while others were in private services, small businesses, agriculture, and livestock.

The impact of COVID-19 has been devastating. 74% of the surveyed People with Disabilities reported zero income since the shutdown began, with women affected more severely (79% compared to 69% of men). Average monthly earnings for women were already low at BDT 6,245, and most households had minimal savings or cash reserves. As a result, families are cutting protein-rich food first and turning to informal credit. Without quick support, this will lead to long-term nutritional damage and deeper debt.

Innovision Consulting recommends immediate food assistance to prevent credit traps and long-term interventions to diversify income sources, especially through agriculture and livestock, to build greater resilience for People with Disabilities against future shocks.
