Innovision Consulting’s Digest 4 analyses the COVID-19 impact on the low-income population, specifically migrant male workers. The rapid survey of 30 male respondents (average age 28) shows these workers have been abroad for 5.33 years on average and spent BDT 482,633 in migration costs.
While 53% believe their households can sustain expenses for over a year and 17% for 7–12 months, 67% expect household income to be affected soon. Most plan to use savings, sell assets or take loans rather than cut expenses drastically.
Innovision Consulting highlights that although these migrant male workers’ families appear more resilient in the short term than other low-income groups, long-term unemployment could deplete savings and hinder re-migration. Innovision recommends targeted relief for those without savings or food stocks and measures to utilise the skills of returnee migrant male workers during the lockdown period. This will safeguard remittances and support smoother economic recovery for Bangladesh’s low-income population.
