Digest 2: Economic impact of COVID-19 crisis on Third Gender community in Bangladesh

Innovision Consulting’s Digest 2 analyses the economic impact of COVID-19 on Bangladesh’s Third Gender community, one of the most vulnerable low-income groups. The rapid survey found that 100% of respondents reported a sharp decrease in income over the last two weeks, with 82% earning absolutely nothing. Only 18% managed an average of BDT 1,444 during this period.

To survive, 84% drastically cut expenses while all who used to send money home completely stopped remittances. Loan repayments have become nearly impossible, with 86% needing immediate deferral. Meanwhile, 59% received no support at all, and the 41% who got limited help (average BDT 940) do not expect it to continue.

The Third Gender community is now counting on food and monetary assistance to survive the crisis. Innovision Consulting stresses that targeted relief is essential to prevent deeper economic displacement and long-term vulnerability for this marginalised group.
