The Decent Employment for Marginalised Youth in Retail project in Bangladesh was aimed at developing a training model that creates sustainable livelihoods for disadvantaged urban youth through partnerships with the retail sector and the Government of Bangladesh (GoB). Innovison examined the retail employment landscape to identify opportunities for inclusive skills development and decent work practices through this report.
Innovision applied mixed research methods all across Dhaka, Chattogram, Khulna, Sylhet, and Gazipur. The study included 35 in-depth interviews (IDI) with retail companies and associations, a quantitative survey of 720 employers, and qualitative interviews with 48 employees across six retail industries, including clothing, electronics, supermarkets, food products, mobile accessories, and furniture.
Findings suggest that Bangladesh’s retail sector is expanding with rising demand for sales roles, particularly junior salespersons. However, skills gaps remain in communication, customer service, and product knowledge. Innovison recommends targeted training programmes, partnerships with retail associations, and inclusive human resource (HR) policies to expand decent employment opportunities for marginalized youth.
